Introduction to Intaglio for beginners

We’ve just added our Introduction to Intaglio course to the ‘Workshops’ page ! This course is designed for anyone new to etching who would like to get a good grounding in the techniques and an opportunity to produce a small edition of their own etchings to take home.

The course will run for 3 weeks on Saturday afternoons, 2.30pm – 5.30pm – 14th, 21st and 28th March and you need to book and pay for all three sessions by 7th March please.

Your tutor will be experienced and friendly etcher  Ralph Overill.  In the first class he will talk you through, and show examples of, the drypoint technique and by the end of the day you will have prepared your own plate, made a drypoint drawing on it and printed off 2-3 copies to keep. The second class will move onto hard ground intaglio etching techniques and you will learn to prepare and draw onto your own aluminium plate. The third and final class will show you how to prepare and mix the etching solution; etch your plate and print it.

You will take home full course notes and your 2 editions of etchings. You need to bring nothing but your ideas and enthusiasm ! etching

All our classes are kept to very small numbers – a maximum of 4 people – so you will get plenty of personal attention. You will be supplied with 2 aluminium plates to work with and all other tools and materials will be supplied.

Wherever possible we will be using ‘safe’ acrylic resist materials during the course but you need to be aware that Hippo Screenprinters is a working print studio where some solvent based inks are used so, unfortunately, our classes are not suitable for anyone who is sensitive to solvent fumes.
